Clear Writing is Clear Thinking
You might have the best idea or the best message, but if you can’t clearly articulate it and get people to rally people around your thinking, then your thinking isn’t clear enough.
Ever stumbled when talking about your idea? 😵💫
Whether you’re explaining an concept or an idea to a friend, your boss, or a colleague, if you’re stumbling over your words and over explaining to blank faces, it’s a big hint that you’re not totally clear about it yourself. How to get clear?
Practise writing. ✍️
If your thinking isn’t totally clear, it’ll show in your writing. Your writing will be fluffy, full of jargon, wishy washy, non-persuasive and light on meaning. So practise writing, and you’ll see where you need more clarity.
Write for a beginner.
This doesn’t mean dumb it down. If you were to sit down with someone who’s not fully versed in the topic, would it make sense to them? You need to be able to speak a shared language – that means being able to articulate the technical stuff.
Make your case.
Pick up your pen or your laptop and practise articulating your idea over and over again until you’d be confident enough to stand up on your own and make your case to a room. Then do just that, to your mirror.
Be succinct.
Be crystal clear. Strip out any redundant words or messaging. Make sure you’re using the right names and terms. If you stumble over any words or messages when you’re speaking, pick up that pen again.
